Michael Phelps gets his second chance at bettering Mark Spitz’s record of seven golds. The question is not if he can do it, but rather who can stop him. Phelps owns the world’s best time in each of his five individual events and only Ryan Lochte in the individual medley events has been able to seriously challenge Phelps. The event schedule works against Lochte in the 200-meter IM as he also swims the finals of the 200 backstroke on the same day.
Phelps is most vulnerable to upset in shorter races. His only 100 event comes last, and if he has four individual golds in as many tries, his confidence level will surely be soaring. Plus, Speedo will kick in with a handsome seven-figure bonus.
